Character NAME: Jason Grace
Canon & MEDIUM: Heroes of Olympus (books)
Canon PULL-POINT: post-House of Hades
Character AGE: 16
Character ABILITIES: Jason is an excellent fighter, with twelve years of training in Roman legionary warfare, and has displayed skill with both spears and swords. In addition to this, as the son of Jupiter he has an array of sky-themed powers -- he has influence over various sky and storm spirits (and can summon a horse-shaped storm spirit named Tempest), some immunity to electricity, can control the wind, fly on air currents, generate storms and electricity, and summon bolts of lightning. He can also speak Latin.
Character HISTORY: Jason Grace @ Camp Half-Blood Wiki
Jason was the son of a TV star who attracted the attention of the King of Olympus -- twice. The first time, in his Greek form of Zeus, resulted in Jason's older sister Thalia, while during the occasion that produced Jason, Zeus was in his Roman form, Jupiter. Cheating on the Goddess of Marriage twice with the same woman tends to start some pretty intense godly domestic disputes, however, so Jupiter had Jason named after Juno's favorite ancient Greek hero in an attempt to placate her. Jason lived with his alcoholic mother and Thalia for two years (during which time he apparently tried to eat a stapler, producing the most anticlimactic mysterious scar of all time), until Juno decided that Jason would be her champion and commanded his mother to give him to Lupa to be trained as a Roman.
After being literally raised by wolves for a year or two, Jason was sent to Camp Jupiter, the home and training ground for Roman demigods. He spent twelve years as part of the Roman Legion, and in that time he was inducted into its disgraced Fifth Cohort, largely restored its status, became praetor of the legion, slew the Trojan sea monster, toppled the throne of Kronos, and generally became a big damn hero.
After all that, Juno apparently decided to meddle in his life again, and the events of the books happened. Juno locked away his memories and had him brought to Camp Half-Blood -- the camp for Greek demigods -- along with Piper and Leo, who have been given fake memories of time spent with him and believe him to be their boyfriend and best friend, respectively. The three of them leave on a quest to save Juno and get into all kinds of shenanigans in the process. During this quest, Jason is finally reunited with his sister, the only person he'd been able to remember in his amnesia despite not having seen her since he was two. Everyone successfully frees Juno, Jason finally gets to explain the he's from the Roman camp, and everyone gets started on preparations to have the two camps meet and then travel to Greece for an even more dangerous quest.
Eight months pass while their ship, the Argo II, is being built, and in this time Jason and Piper apparently started dating for real. When the ship is complete, they, Leo, and Annabeth (a daughter of Athena) travel to Camp Jupiter to retrieve Annabeth's boyfriend Percy, who was similarly kidnapped by Hera but in reverse and sent to the Roman camp. The meeting between the camps goes spectacularly badly the the Argo II's crew is forced to flee along with Percy and a pair of Roman demigods, Hazel and Frank. The seven of them travel to Greece to retrieve the Athena Parthenos, rescue Hazel's brother Nico, close the Doors of Death -- and with all that completed successfully, now have to go on to defeat Gaea and stop the Greek and Roman camps from trying to kill each other.
Character PERSONALITY: As a result of his years spent living the Roman Legionary, Jason is serious and disciplined. He's an excellent leader with a strong sense of justice, and he strives to live up to the expectations placed on him as the son of Jupiter. He's generally friendly, though not shown as being especially close to anyone in the Roman camp besides his co-praetor Reyna, and he appeared to thrive as the hero of Camp Jupiter.
Because of his time with the Greeks, however, both while he has amnesia and afterwards, we're able to see how much of that is just due to the way he grew up, and how much is really him. Jason is shown to have a decent sense of humor and an optimistic personality, and he seems to relax more and more as the series progresses. His greatest conflicts tend to lie in his conflict over these Roman and Greek sides of himself -- still Roman by birth and attached to it by a life lived in that camp, but finding himself more and more drawn to the less militaristic Greek life. The the end of The House of Hades, he's apparently no longer Roman enough to command the Roman ghosts Nico summoned. The fact that he cedes his praetorship to Frank in that moment serves to illustrate his continued breaking away from the Roman life and his lack of attachment to such titles.
Because while he is a great leader and hero, Jason seems to have been struggling with the expectations placed on him as Jupiter's son. Unlike Percy, who maintains independence from his status as the son of Poseidon and hero of Camp Half-Blood, Jason isn't so easily able to separate himself from such things. He doesn't like letting people down, so he tries to live up to everyone's expectations, but he doesn't want to rely on his legacy either, so he feels the need to make a name for himself. He chose to join the Fifth Cohort specifically because it was considered the "worst" of the Legion, with the intent of restoring its honor.
Percy and Jason act as foils to each other in many ways, as the heroes of their respective camps and children of the Big Three. Jason is generally more respectful and cares more about authority than Percy does, and he's less inclined to rule-breaking. They both rebel in their own ways against what's expected of them, but Jason tends to do it from within the system and change things properly, as opposed to Percy's "fuck the police imma do my own thing" style. Though good friends, they clash over who's stronger -- a fight Jason is apparently confident that he would win -- and who's the "leader" of their group -- a title they both end up ceding to Annabeth anyway. Jason is more dutiful, and while he's extremely loyal to his friends and comrades, he tends to be more realistic. For example, when the seven find out that Nico is being held captive in Greece, Jason points out that it's probably a trap, and that most of them barely know Nico and can't necessarily trust him, while Percy can't even imagine not going to save him.
That isn't to say he's entirely cold, however. Though more cautious about where his loyalties lie than Percy, he's fiercely loyal to those that do have his trust, and he's overall a very compassionate person. He defends Piper from girls making racist comments about her when they first met and he didn't even know her, he's hesitant to lead her on romantically until he's got all his memory back and can be sure he isn't already taken by Reyna, and he's immediately comforting and protective of Nico after learning about his secret crush even though beforehand Jason had been uneasy around him. What's often mistaken as him being cold or boring is the fact that Jason is somewhat more impersonal than the others. Most likely due to his military upbringing and status as a leader in that system, he tends to be impartial and careful with his emotions. He's also extremely selfless, to the point that even the chapters told in his point of view often focus less on his personal problems and more on the others.
